Emerging Environmental Contaminants

The natural world is a dynamic system, ever-changing and adapting, everything intertwined, creating a balanced network. The dynamic nature of the planet causes anthropogenic influences to transcend ecological compartments causing ubiquitous presence.

There are several kinds of emerging environmental contaminants (EECs), also known as Contaminants of Emerging Concern:

  • Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products

    • Eg: Illicit Drugs, Antibiotics, Prescription Drugs, soaps, deodorants

  • Agricultural Chemicals

  • Industrial Chemicals

EECs can also be classified by their method of action.

  • Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs)

    • Bisphenol-A (BPA), Human Contraceptives,

  • Bioaccumulation
